Supporting Mental Health and Well-Being: Two Sides of the Same Coin

-Ms. Samrin Khan

At SVS English School, we believe that mental health is as essential as physical health. Particularly for students, mental well-being is crucial because thousands of thoughts run through our minds every day. These thoughts shape our actions, and our actions, in turn, shape our future. A healthy, positive mindset enables students to grow in the right direction. Our minds are powerful—faster than an airplane—capable of traveling to any part of the world in seconds. It is often said, "If you can control your mind, you can conquer the world." Achieving this, however, is not an overnight process. It requires consistent support, guidance, and mentorship from experts. We are proud to have Mrs. Sailee Khot, M.A. in Clinical Psychology, as our in-house counselor, who has touched the hearts of young minds and guided them to success and fulfillment. Her extensive experience and commitment to working with students bring joy and meaning that goes beyond material rewards. A key player in our school's commitment to mental well-being is our esteemed chairman, Mr. Devdas Kadam. His foresight and decisive leadership have been instrumental in creating a nurturing environment that prioritizes mental health alongside academic excellence. As a major contributor to our initiatives, Mr. Devdas Kadam emphasizes that supporting our students today ensures a brighter tomorrow for our nation. Together, with the help of our community, we are committed to fostering healthy minds and strong hearts among our SVS stars. As Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, once said, "Children are the strength of our nation." At SVS, we align with this vision, believing that nurturing the mental health of our students is essential for their success and the future of our society.

Mental Health: A Core Part of Our School Community

We understand that mental well-being is essential not only for students to learn effectively but also for teachers to teach with passion. At SVS English School, supporting mental health and well-being go hand in hand. That’s why our school integrates mental health care into our daily routines, ensuring students and staff have access to the resources they need. With expertise in Graphology, Colour Therapy, and Art Therapy, we offer comprehensive care to those in need. Michelle Obama once said, "We need to make time for ourselves, no matter how busy we are." At SVS, we encourage both students and teachers to take time for self-care and make mental health a priority, promoting a healthy and balanced environment for everyone.

For Students: Enhancing Academic Performance Through Mental Health Care

Being a student comes with many challenges—balancing homework, exams, and friendships isn't always easy. To help students manage these pressures, SVS provides professional guidance and individual support whenever students feel overwhelmed.

Why Mental Health is Important for Students:

When students feel emotionally well, they are better able to focus, improve their academic performance, and enjoy school life. Mental well-being helps students develop the confidence to overcome challenges both inside and outside the classroom.

Tips for Students to Support Their Well-Being:

  • Talk About Stress and Get Help Early: SVS encourages students to express their concerns and seek support for challenges related to schoolwork, friendships, or personal issues.

  • Stick to a Balanced Routine: Alongside academics, students should engage in extracurricular activities to maintain a healthy balance and reduce stress.

  • Practice Self-Care Regularly: Activities like sports, art, or relaxation are essential. SVS offers various clubs and programs to help students unwind and recharge.

  • Use School Resources: Whether facing academic or personal difficulties, students have access to a safe space for open conversations.

  • Limit Social Media and Focus on Real-Life Interactions: Social media can increase stress, so we promote screen-free activities like sports and clubs to build meaningful connections.

For Teachers: Balancing Work Responsibilities and Well-Being

At SVS English School, we recognize that teaching is a demanding profession. We value the dedication of our staff and are committed to fostering a work environment that promotes both professional fulfillment and personal well-being. Tailored support is available to help teachers manage stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Why Mental Health is Important for Teachers:

When teachers prioritize their well-being, they can better connect with students and create a positive learning environment. SVS supports teachers in balancing their professional responsibilities with self-care practices, enabling them to perform at their best.

Tips for Teachers to Maintain Well-Being:

  • Set Boundaries to Maintain Work-Life Balance: We encourage teachers to disconnect from work after hours and manage their workload effectively.

  • Incorporate Well-Being Practices Throughout the Day: Simple practices like mindfulness or short walks can help manage stress. SVS provides resources to incorporate these habits into daily routines.

  • Build a Strong Network Among Colleagues: Teachers are encouraged to connect and share experiences with peers for mutual support.

  • Use Wellness Programs and Services Available at School: SVS offers workshops and counseling sessions to enhance mental well-being.

  • Model Healthy Habits for Students: Teachers who practice and promote self-care inspire students to adopt similar habits, contributing to a school culture of well-being. Building a Supportive School Community Together

At SVS English School, we are committed to creating a community where everyone feels valued and supported. We believe that mental health is a shared responsibility, and by prioritizing it, we can foster a thriving school environment. Our goal is to ensure that students and teachers receive the care and guidance they need to succeed. As Michelle Obama’s words remind us, "We need to make time for ourselves." This philosophy aligns with our mission to make well-being a top priority for both students and staff. Let’s work together to create a community where mental health matters, and everyone feels empowered to achieve their best. At SVS, we are proud of our students—our SVS stars—who represent the future strength of our nation. With the guidance of our in-house counselor and the support of our entire school community, alongside the visionary leadership of our chairman, Mr. Devdas Kadam, we aim to provide the care and resources needed to shape a bright future.
